KEY BOND GLASS GLUE is very easy to use. There are 5 easy steps involved:
1) Clean and dry all surfaces that are to be bonded. Stay away from cleaners that contain silicon, as they will leave a film on the surface of the glass and interfere with the bonding process.
2) Mark out exactly where the pieces are to be bonded. Take a lot of care when performing this step; it is very hard to remove once dried. If you have to remove the bond, the best way to remove is by heating at a temperature of 133° Centigrade. This process will soften the bond.
3) Apply a modest amount of “KEY BOND UV GLASS GLUE” to one of the piece which is to be bonded. Firmly press the two pieces together until the adhesive has spread and started to ooze out the edge of the bond. Make sure that this oozing action takes place.
4) Double check that all pieces are in the exact location that you would like them, then go ahead and place the pieces under UV lamp and expose for 2 ? 3 minutes. The process can at times take longer or less time to cure; please test the time before you try it on an item you would like to keep.
5) Clean up the glass with a single edge razor blade and glass cleaner when finished. The adhesive should have oozed out of the bond and hardened a bit. This is normal and can easily be removed with a razor blade. Ultra Violet Glue will create a super strong, almost unbreakable bond. As mentioned before, the only way to soften the bond is with extreme heat. KEY BOND is clear, but not invisible unless the bonded surface is completely covered with KEY BOND. Do not shake KEY BOND bottle as this will cause air bubbles. Do not return unused KEY BOND to original container as this might contaminate the product. Remember KEY BOND will bond glass to other objects (please see the product list to get more info) depending upon one of the surface being transparent to allow the UV rays to cure the adhesive.
Helpful Tips
1) Hold UV lamp close to object that is to be bonded.
2) Directly point the UV rays at the area where you need the bonding, as UV rays do not bend.
3) Make sure you calculate the time of exposure to ensure proper bonding and curing.
4) Use more rather than less, to insure complete coverage of area to be bonded. After using any of the KEY BOND products you will have a feel for the right amount to be used.
5) During the bonding process make sure you press the bonded area properly to release all the air bubbles out properly. If air is left in the area to be bonded it will be seen after curing.
6) Uneven pressure or clamping will cause feather lines to develop between the bonded pieces. 7) Try to distribute KEY BOND adhesive evenly under the bonded pieces to insure proper bonding and avoid “feathering” or “water marks”
Q: Can we use it for external use?
A: We do not recommend using it for external use , as the UV Adhesive is not waterproof. However if you want to use it for external purpose we recommend to bonding surfaces must additionally be sealed with clear silicone.
Q: Does the adhesive work in extreme temperatures?
A: Our glue works at the temperature range of -20°C to +100°C. Check theTechnical Data Sheet to get more information.
Q: How must the parts be prepared prior to gluing?
A: Download the Application Method sheet to get details on how to prepare and apply the glue. For more information please contact us.
Q: Can I mix different UV adhesives?
A: No, This will hinder the characteristics of the adhesive and will result in negativity of the bond.
Q: How do I remove excess adhesive?
A: If the excess adhesive is still wet, just wipe it off with a clean, lint-free paper towel and some glass cleaner (Iso-propanol or similar), and check that you have removed all excess glue before carrying on. If the excess adhesive has already cured and is hard, you will have to use a glass scraper. Make sure you do not scratch the glass surface!
Q: Do I have to apply a lot of adhesive?
A: No. Evenly spread the adhesive on the surface you want to bond. However, after having worked 3 or 4 times with the UV bonding technology, you will have the right idea for the correct quantity.
Q: Is the adhesive dangerous?
A: We do not recommend swallowing the adhesive. Try not to use the glue without proper care and protection. To see more info on the glue please see our Material Safety Data Sheet.
Q: Can I repair car windshields?
A: No. We do not recommend the use of the adhesive for external use.
Q: Can I fill in gaps of irregular glass with it?
A: Now. However you can cover the gap with another piece of glass, metal or wood.
Q: Can I disassemble the object if I make a mistake?
A: Yes. The bond can only be broken at a temperature of 133°C.
Q: Can I build aquariums with the adhesive?
A: No. We recommend using our laminated glass for extra security and for bonding we recommend the use of silicon. As the adhesive is not water proof.
Q: How do I apply the adhesive?
A: Please download our Application Method sheet to get details on how to prepare and apply the glue. For more information please contact us.
Q: What is the shelf life of the adhesive?
A: If the bottle is stored properly in a cool, dark and dry place the shelf life is 12 months. Once the bottle is opened the life of the adhesive is 6 months.
Q: How do I know that I have reached final bond strength?
A: See curing times and our Application Method Sheet.
Q: How strong is the adhesive?
A: Considering all the step of the bonding process has been carried out correctly the bond will be stronger than the glass itself.
Q: Will the adhesive lose strength when it gets older?
A: No, if all steps of the bonding process have been carried out correctly.
Q: What adhesive do I use?
A: Please see our list of UV Glass Adhesive to see which glue suits you the best.
