1. Why can’t you use ordinary paint for glass surface?
Glass is a very simple substrate, yet glass has very unusual scientific properties. Glass attracts atmospheric moisture inherently, has tricky expansion and contraction properties, and is non-porous making it extremely difficult to bond to. ECOMAGIC™ is 100% Acrylic Water based paint, it has industrial strength, chemical resistant, scratch resistant, water resistant, and permanently bonds to glass. ECOMAGIC™ is truly a revolutionary product.
ECOMAGIC™ is a single component ready to use paint. It is non-solvent water based cleaners to assist in quickly achieving a clean substrate without putting the applicator in a hazardous toxic work environment or leaving behind a spoiling residue.
2. What thickness/type of glass is generally used for back painted glass?
The industry standard glass type and thickness for back painted glass back splashes, cabinet coverings and wall coverings are 8mm low iron glass. This glass is optically clear with no green effect like regular glass. Since this glass is clear, it will not modify and dull the back painted color. In some cases, regular glass (slightly tinted green) is used for back painted glass to achieve a particular color, especially when back painted white (regular glass painted white creates a light aqua green effect). Back painted glass is generally not tempered unless you want it to be. If you have an area behind a stove of cook top that will have back painted glass, it may require tempered glass to hold up to the temperature fluctuations that may crack a non tempered piece of glass. ECOMAGIC™ glass paint can be applied to any glass surface, any thickness, and any size glass such as: annealed glass, tempered glass, low iron glass, casted glass, spandrel glass, laminated glass and more.
3. What thickness glass is used for back painted glass counter tops and table tops?
6mm, 8mm, 12mm glasses is generally used for back painted glass counter tops and back painted glass table tops. Tempered glass is generally used.
4. How do you apply ECOMAGIC™ water based glass paint?
ECOMAGIC™ water based glass paint can be applied to glass easily with any paint spraying equipment, preferably a HVLP spray gun, curtain roller machine, jet spray machines or a paint brush.
5. What is the best way to clean glass before painting glass?
Cleaning glass properly is the most important step when back painting glass. Scrub glass with isopropyl using non-woven cloth. Now clean the glass surface again with microfiber towels. Make sure the glass surface is squeaky clean feeling and sounding. *Note: Acetone can also be used to clean glass that might have adhesive residue from glass bumpers, heavy oils or dirt. ECOMAGIC glass cleaner can also be used for cleaning of glass that is really dirty/large.
6. How do I remove Glass Paint overspray on glass?
If you get over spray on the glaze side or edges of your glass there is no need to worry. Cleaning the over spray off the glass is as simple as you can use de-mineralized water and non-woven cloth to clean the glass before the initial curing, which is generally 20 mins after spraying on the glass. To get rid of thick areas of paint, use single edge razor blades.
7. How do I remove imperfections in lacquer painted glass?
Sometimes glass is not completely cleaned, small insects, or debris in the air can get on the glass surface while you are back painting the glass. The best solution to removing these types of imperfections is to wait until the paint has cured. Once it has cured it is best to take 120 grit sand paper and gently sand through the paint where the imperfections exist. (Don’t worry if the glass surface gets a little obscured by the sand paper) Once the imperfection is removed, clean the bare glass area with rubbing alcohol and clean paper towels. Now you can re-paint those areas with a spray gun, brush or finger paint. (Paint color tone might seem lighted when the paint is wet. Once dry, the color will usually blend perfectly)
8. How do I clean Glass Paint from my paint gun and tools?
We recommend water, a cloth and small brushes to clean out your paint gun canister. Spray water through the paint gun for 30-60 seconds after the gun is clean. Repeat several times if necessary. Sometimes it is good to disassemble the paint gun and clean all of the internal parts with water, and/or let stand in a cup of water for several hours.
9. How do I install finished lacquer painted glass?
Neutral cure silicone and/or double sided glazers tape can be used to install ECOMAGIC™ water based back painted glass. Even though acetic cure silicone have had no negative effect on ECOMAGIC™ back painted glass in adhesive compatibility testing, we still do not recommend the use of acetic cure silicone.
10. What is “neutral cure silicone”?
Neutral (meaning neutral alcoxy) silicone sealants release alcohol as they cure, and have almost no smell. This type of silicone is also referred to as “acid free silicone”. This is recommended for use with back painted glass.
11. What is “acetic cure silicone”?
Acetic silicone sealants release acetic acid (which smells a little like vinegar) as they cure. Acetic silicones can discolor the silvering on mirror. This is not recommended for use with back painted glass or mirror.
